The build up to Christmas is pretty exciting for kids and counting down the days with an advent calendar contribute to the anticipation. If you can afford it those with toys instead of chocolate and candy can be quite special.
Lego Star Wars Advent Calendar
One of the most exciting advent calendars for older kids (and adults) of all ages must be the much anticipated Lego Star Wars edition (7958). Lego say this 266 piece set, with 8 minifigures, is aimed at those aged 6 to 14-years-old. It is priced at $40.
The New 2011 Lego City Advent Calendar
There have been new Lego City calendars released for a number of years now. The latest set for 2011 has a police theme. It includes 6 minifigures, a dog, a Christmas tree and two snow mobiles. It also has a building which is constructed over three days, some patients required! It retails for $35 or £19 in the UK.
Playmobil Advent Calendars for 2011 for Children Aged 4+
Playmobil is generally most suitable for children aged between 4 and 8, they especially enjoy playing with the characters and animals. Some construction may be involved but Playmobil is usually simple and may appeal to those who do not like lego.
This year the advent calendars are selling for between $20 to $38 in the US and Canada or £13 to £21 in the UK, with the new sets usually being the cheapest.

In addition, Playmobil have Christmas themed sets such as the charming Christmas Room (4829). This new set includes a tree, presents, toys and two people. There are also a number of nativity sets, which range in price from $11 to $30 (£9 to £23 in the UK).
Advent Calendars with Toys for Girls
Polly Pocket and My Little Pony both have advent calendars with toys that are more likely to appeal to girls. These are the same or similar every year. Girls enjoy Playmobil toys, the Post Office and the Pony Ranch being more girlie.
Fisher Price Nativity Advent Calendar for Younger Children
For about $30 you can buy a calendar which can be used year after year and is suitable for toddlers and ideal for Christian households. Each day they add something new to the nativity scene.
Unique Advent Calendars for Children
Older advent calendars for previous years will still be available, with toys that can be played with all year. These can be a great treat.but are also a little too expensive for some families.
